Netbook Reviews - Acer AO532h-2326 10.1-Inch Netbook

Slightly slimmer in profile than your average netbook the Acer AO532h-2326 is still one of the entry-level laptops within its class mainly due to its below $300 price. However, Acer have actually taken the time to make the keyboard a bit more comfortable with wider keys, rounding up the corners for an overall much more comfortable typing experience. The track pad offers multi-gesture support, so you can pinch to zoom and so forth across the small track-pad's surface. The chassis feels solid enough but there are no discerning features or style to this netbook, which is understandable considering the price.

Featuring an Intel Atom N450 the Acer AO532h-2326 also uses a six-cell battery, something you don't often see in a netbook of this price. However, the 10.1 inch display can only go up to the standard 1024 x 600 pixel resolution so don't expect any HD movies. The hard disk drive is slightly larger at 250GB while the netbook itself weighs in at 2.7 pounds. Connectivity also seems to have got a boost with wireless 802.11 b / g / n wi-fi although other connections like the VGA port, three USB ports, the RJ-45 port and SD-card reader are pretty much standard fare.

The Acer AO532h-2326 definitely feels like it has been optimized somewhat as it offers a very long battery life of more than seven hours on a single charge. While it does come with Windows 7 Starter everything else is as expected for an entry-level netbook. Performance for the Acer AO532h-2326 has not been compromised at all, so you can expect to get a slightly faster performance for general office work, Internet browsing, some multimedia and not that many windows or applications open at one time.

Overall, the Acer AO532h-2326 delivers some top-notch features to go with solid performance at a very affordable price. We were pleasantly surprised by the better keyboard, multi-gesture track pad, 250GB hard disk drive, six-cell battery and wireless-n wi-fi connectivity. Clearly if your budget runs around the $300 price tag then the long-lasting Acer AO532h-2326 should definitely be on your consideration list, if not at the top then at least within the top three.

Specifications: I just can't remember the last I was so exciting over anything. I think the best netbook of 2009 has just been released! When I heard that the Asus Eee PC 1005HA netbook was released, I wasted no time in getting my hands on one of those. Asus netbooks has always been my favorite but I had always wished that they had a more stylish design. Then they released the 1008HA, which was very stylish but somehow expensive. The Asus Eee PC 1005HA netbook is not only cheaper but sports the almost identical stylish design of the 1008HA!

The 1005HA has the specs of the latest netbooks in the market. It runs on Intel's Atom N280 1.66GHz processor and comes with 1GB of RAM. It has a 160GB (5400 rpm) hard drive and a 10.1-inch LED back-lit screen. You can also use its built in 1.3MP web-cam for video conferences. It is Bluetooth 2.1 and wi-fi enabled (802.11b/g/n).

Design: Due to the 6-cell battery, the Asus Eee PC 1005HA netbook is a little heavier than usual, but nevertheless still very portable. It weighs at just 2.8 pounds and measures at 10.3 x 7 x 1.5 inches. It sports the same tapered 'seashell' design as the 1008HA, with a glossy surface. The Asus Eee PC 1005HA netbook now looks just as stylish, if not more, than Acer and Samsung models.

Features & Performance: The keyboard Asus Eee PC 1005HA netbook is extremely easy to use, with a full sized Shift key. The 1005HA fared very well in terms of performance too. Its multitasking speed, and iTunes encoding speed was pretty impressive. The most amazing feature of this netbook is its battery lifespan. Asus claims that it can lasts up to 10.5 hours on a single charged. To test its battery life, I play the movie Transformers on it over and over again till the battery drained. It lasted almost 7 hours of non-stop video playback. I think if you were just to use it to surf the net, chat, music or word processing, it can easily reach 9 or 10 hours.

What is the Most Powerful Netbook For $300?

When you spend money on something you should be aware of all the functions and features so it only makes sense to be curious about the performance of a netbook. There are dozens of different models on the market so you should be aware of what the options are to be able to choose the best.

Netbooks are mini notebooks with a few features omitted and a few extra added. They're made to be small, efficient and most important of all, cheap. A netbook that is not cheap is a netbook that is not going to sell well, because the market just doesn't accept computers that small that are expensive. Just look at sub-notebooks, they virtually vanished when EEE pcs and minis hit the market.

The obvious problem with low price is that the components can't be really powerful. Even if they was the battery life would suffer and dip below 2-3 hours, a thing I wouldn't be really comfortable with.

With that said, almost all netbooks come with Intel Atom processor. A solution from the most powerful processor maker that focuses on efficiency and price foremost. What it means is that almost every netbook is going to be that strong. If you want some extra performance you can get dual core atom, but not for $300. They can be found more often in the $450 range and for that price I would rather have a full size notebook.

For $300 you get a netbook with a 10" screen, 160 or 250GB hard disk drive and 1GB RAM. The only difference between them is the actual model of the processor, the performance is going to be similar in all so you can't really go wrong with any of them. Atom N270, N280 and N450 are the most popular variations.

All three are similar in speed but N450 sticks out with a few extras. It has graphics adapter and memory controller integrated, thus computers with N450 processor will have much longer battery life than mini netbooks installed with the older cores. Z520 should already be forgotten, it's just not strong enough for streaming media and playing videos.

If you want to have the fastest netbook, you need to buy either 1201N from Asus, or an Nvidia ION based S12 from Lenovo, but don't expect their prices to be under $400. If your budget is tight, and this economy chances are that it is, pick a 10" netbook with a good keyboard and a high battery performance, for that I'd suggest going for N450 based solutions, everything else is up to your own decision.

Toshiba Mini NB505-N508BL Netbook Review - Editor's Choice

Easy grip design and generally good build and specifications make for a very satisfying netbook. A definite keeper and mobile road warrior.

It has always been my dream to get an ultralight, ultraportable computer. After going through the last 8 years lugging around a ton of bricks on my shoulders, I was more than ready to shed some pounds and ease the weight upon my shoulders. That's when I started looking around for netbooks and chanced upon the Toshiba NB505-N508BL.

For someone who can't live without Skype, the Toshiba NB505-N508BL has an integrated webcam in addition to a 10.1 inch back-lit screen at 1024 X 600 native resolution. Yes this is pretty standard as netbooks go with size being a major consideration for manufacturers. The in-built speakers are decent (Harmon Kardon) and everything works pretty much out of the box. Just pull it out and plug it into your broadband connection and the world awaits!

There are also the standard connections and specifications available such as the Wifi adapter (b/g/n), a 250 Gb hard disk, a 1.66 Ghz atom processor, Ethernet LAN availability, 1 Gb of DDR2 RAM (which is easily upgradeable) and a Windows 7 Starter OS that oversees everything. Bluetooth was missing however. For those who consider this a deal-breaker, a Bluetooth adapter is easily available (and cheap) and simply plugs into one of the USB ports on your netbook. There, it's no longer a deal-breaker!

One of the nice features Toshiba has worked into this netbook model has to be the non-slip, easy-grip, finish. This helps to prevent accidents where a netbook has slipped out of your hand(s) because the surfaces are slippery. Even though this netbook will only set you back approximately $300 or so, it's still not something you want dropping onto the floor ever so often!

Speaking of the price, many people tend to compare netbook with tablets. I say that in most cases, netbooks are better due to the amount of memory you get, 250Gb versus 64Gb; the real keyboard versus a virtual one AND it's a lot cheaper!

In keeping with Windows 7, the touch pad is multi-touch capable and the 6-cell battery lets you keep working or watching videos for up to 9 hours! Oh and it comes with Google Chrome pre-installed - that gets this so many bonus points on so many levels!

All in all, the Toshiba NB505-N508BL has worked out to be a constant companion and fantastic investment; definitely money well spent. I no longer lug my larger notebook around with me and I'm still able to remain as productive as before. The main difference is that I now have to head to the gym to build up those shoulder muscles. Trust me, I'm not complaining about that one bit!

Both Acer and Asustek have a wide product variety and attractive price points, especially suitable for students and business users. Netbooks could serve as the standard computing platform for students in schools, colleges and universities. Small and medium business owners and corporate executives who are out and about, could also benefit from netbooks. Sales force personnel who are constantly on the move visiting customers, could use netbooks to connect with back office applications over the web from a customer location.

Today, more work is being done on bringing netbooks capable of working with different operating systems (e.g. Linux), chip sets etc., to make low cost computing feasible for all user groups. Specifications: The Sony VAIO VPC-W111XX/T netbook comes with a Intel N280 processor (1.66GHZ), 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard disk. It has a 10.1-inch LED backlit LCD display and is powered by a 3-cell battery. In terms of connectivity, this model has 2 USB ports, an Ethernet (10/100) port, a VGA output, a SD card slot, Memory Stick Duo card slot, headphone jack, microphone jack, wi-fi (802.11b/g/n) and Bluetooth connectivity (2.1).

Design: The Sony VAIO VPC-W111XX/T netbook comes in brown, pink and white (yes, no black). It measures at 10.5 x 7.1 x 1.3 inches and weighs in at 2.6 pounds. The external casing has a stylish matte surface. All they keys on its keyboard is isolated (like those on Apple computers) and it feels pretty good to type on despite its size. The memory card slots are located on the front, while the other ports and jacks are located on the side.

Features & Performance: The Sony VAIO VPC-W111XX/T netbook works just like any netbooks in the market. It runs on Windows XP and can handle most simple computing tasks pretty well. A feature that makes this model stand out from the rest it's the VAIO Multimedia Streaming software that enables data stream between DLNA-enabled appliances (like your PC or PS 3). Besides that, there is nothing much that differentiates this model from the rest. Its battery lifespan hovers around just 2.5 hours, which is not much compared to many other competing models (such as the Asus 1005HA and the Toshiba Mini)

Overall: One of the major characteristics of the Sony VAIO VPC-W111XX/T netbook is its price. It currently costs around $499 a piece, which is more that $100 more that other popular netbook models. As much as I would like to justify the price (being a Sony fan), there really isn't much good reason for a consumer to fork out the extra dough on this model. Maybe the premium is paid for the 'glitz and glamour' that comes with the brand name. The Sony VAIO VPC-W111XX/T netbook is best left for Sony fans and those who just can't get over its gorgeous design.
